Internationalization strategy of the spanish economy

The internationalization strategy of the spanish economy, together with the plans of action to the biennial, the government's action in support of the internationalization and reflected the aspiration that policies in this area are a state policy.

To maximize the contribution of the external sector to economic growth and job creation with a structural nature, and improve competitiveness, are the ultimate goals of the strategy, a framework for planning medio-largo term policies in support of internationalization, facilitate coordination of the various actors involved and to improve the access of smes to the various instruments of support. In addition, the strategy incorporates evaluation exercises for measuring the results of the successive biennial action plans, in order to monitor the implementation of the targets set, and the degree of efficiency and effectiveness.

In this context, the updating of the internationalization strategy of the spanish economy 2017-2027 establishes five guiding principles and five lines of action:

Update on the diagnosis, new challenges

After the upgrade of the evaluation of the situation in the internationalization of the spanish economy, there are five major challenges, responding to the profound changes experienced by the world economy not foreseen at the time to design the strategy. New objectives for achieving greater capacity to adapt to changing international context and to accommodate more explicitly the objectives of coordination, gender equality, environmental sustainability and social council, economic security and digitization. These are challenges and objectives of cross-cutting nature, involving different areas of policies and instruments to support internationalization.

  • To achieve a value of nominal exports of goods €400 billion in 2027, with a growth of 30 per cent for the period 2016-2027.
  • An increase in exports of tourist services 90 per cent for the period 2016-2027.
  • That in 2027, 40,000 companies from exporting regularly over 5,000 per year.
  • Reach contracts valued at $650 billion in international tenders for spanish companies, in the period 2017-2027.
  • A stock of foreign direct investment of eur 600 billion, by 2027.

In the framework of the growing interest in the internationalization, coordination of policies, tools and actions should remain the overarching principle that governs all the renewed strategy and of each of the plans that take place. All this with the aim of ensuring coherence and coordination of the action of the public administrations, as well as complementarity with the performance of the private sector.

Policies for increasing the internationalization and coordination are the responsibility of theSecretariat of state for trade,without prejudice to the competence of other ministries and of the autonomous communities. This coordination is carried out by the secretariat of State for trade throughInter-ministerial working group on support for the Internationalization of the spanish company, and the council Interterritorial.
